Child abuse statistics, reporting, and support for victims in the UK
- Child Abuse Statistics (2023):
- Recorded offences of adults neglecting, mistreating, or assaulting children have doubled over the last 5 years in England.
- Between April 2022 and March 2023, there were 29,405 recorded child cruelty and neglect offences, compared to 14,263 between April 2017 and March 2018.
- These figures highlight the urgency of addressing child protection issues.
Reporting Child Abuse:
- 1. Immediate Danger:
- If a child is at immediate risk, call 999.
- For non-emergencies, report online or call 101 (free).
- 2. What to Report:
- Child abuse includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as neglect.
- You don’t need to be certain; it’s okay to report suspicions.
- 3. Support and Reporting:
- Contact the children’s social care team at your local council.
- You can choose to remain anonymous when reporting.
- The NSPCC Helpline (0808 800 5000) provides advice and support.
Support for Victims of Abuse:
- 1. NAPAC (National Association for People Abused in Childhood):
- Provides support for adult survivors of any form of child abuse.
- Call their free, confidential support line: 0808 801 0331 (Mon to Thu: 10 am–9 pm, Fri: 10 am–6 pm).
- Email: support@napac.org.uk.
- 2. Victim Support:
- Offers services for victims and survivors of any abuse or crime.
- Call the 24/7 Supportline: 08 08 16 89 111.
- Access their live chat service and My Support Space (free online resource).
